Barbara Seery

Artist

Barbara Seery is a mixed media artist. Intuitive making and an engagement with materials is at the heart of her work. Textiles are a constant in her practice due to their ability to be manipulated, distressed, printed, layered, and stitched into an altered state. Her recent 3D work makes tangible forms using delicate textiles to narrate her lived experience.

After a career in financial services, Barbara returned to part time education in 2017 in the National College of Art and Design, starting with a University Certificate in Visual Arts Practice leading to a two-year Higher Diploma in Art and Design. In 2023 she obtained a first-class honours degree in Fine Art, Applied Materials – Textile Art and Artefact.

Barbara is a member of element15, a collective of fifteen artists based in Co. Kildare. Formed in 2010 the individual artists have developed their own practice in tandem with each other, distinct but connected. Their practice is multi-disciplinary, with an emphasis on textiles, encompassing wall hanging pieces, sculpture, and installation.

Barbara has exhibited with the collective in The Blue Egg Gallery in Wexford, Carlow Arts Festival and a site-specific exhibition in Castletown House, Co. Kildare. In 2021 they created an extensive art trail across two gardens in Co Wicklow, followed by an entry in Sculpture in Context at the Botanic Gardens in 2022. Barbara is working, with the collective, on a major

exhibition in collaboration with an Irish poet, Jane Clarke, to be held in The Coach House, Dublin Castle in September 2024.
